Aquatic Invasive Species Specialist (Madison, WI)

A University of Wisconsin - Extension academic staff appointment.

Location: University of Wisconsin-Extension, Cooperative Extension, working at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Madison, Wisconsin.


Qualifications: Master's or other graduate degree with at least one degree in a field that relates to the responsibilities of this position such as natural resources management, or a related bachelor's degree and four years of relevant experience. Ability to plan, implement and evaluate community-based, non-formal educational programs that reach, and are accessible to, a wide range of audiences. Ability to teach and communicate ideas effectively verbally, in writing, and through educational technology to adults and youth. Strong group and educational facilitation skills. Ability to organize work and to work productively with indirect supervision in a highly visible public sector environment. Ability to work collaboratively with other paid and non-paid staff; ability to take personal responsibility to help team efforts succeed.

Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills in a team setting; ability to effectively manage conflicts. Skillful in establishing and maintaining professional work relationships and networks. Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a
context of individual and cultural differences. Demonstrated willingness to learn on an ongoing basis. Ability to adapt to changing programming and workplace priorities. Ability to use outcome data for program improvement and accountability. Ability to promote educational programs through mass media and public relations/marketing skills. Ability to use word processing and the Internet. Preferred: Experience with large-scale public outreach/awareness campaigns.

Duties: Develop awareness and active involvement from interested groups and individuals through meetings and other forms of communication to develop and implement an invasive species education strategy for Wisconsin. Help agencies, counties, cities and villages and interested groups identify, develop and implement educational activities in Wisconsin communities, targeted watersheds, and the Great Lakes. Play a lead role in coordinating educational programs for recreational boaters, anglers, shoreland owners, water gardeners, aquarium hobbyists, and other water users. These programs focus is on the effects of invasive aquatic species and methods of preventing their introduction and spread in Wisconsin waters. Work closely in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant and state environmental and conservation groups in these efforts. An important function will be to foster and facilitate stakeholder involvement to develop a statewide invasive species outreach coordination strategy. Expected to provide leadership and support on educational programs that transfer scientific and research based information to local stakeholders and citizens. Organizes with UWEX, Sea Grant and WDNR a process for disseminating information to and developing educational opportunities for interested groups and individuals through various approaches. Assume frequent travel throughout the state and work occasional evenings and weekends as needed to meet local needs.
