Gary Lawrence will discuss sustainable principles of Dongtan City, Chongming Island in metropolitan Shanghai and Treasure Island, San Francisco, USA. The presentation will compare and contrast the pursuit of similar goals related to the development of carbon-free communities. Gary will also present and discuss the ecological footprint model the company has developed to assist communities in Great Britain with becoming more sustainable.
Within Arup, Gary has been the Senior Advisor for the Dongtan City, Chongming Island in metropolitan Shanghai. The Dongtan development is part of plan for at least three new urban developments. These developments have been directed to become "the world's most ecological communities" by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. Each development will house a population of approximately 500,000 people. Energy, water, transport and waste strategies are also being integrated into the development.
Gary Lawrence a principal with Arup and is known as a global leader for sustainability. Within Arup he is also recognized as a specialist in urban sustainability. He currently serves on several major committees some of which include:
* Member, National Summit Planning Committee for the President's Council on Sustainable Development
* Advisory Committee, UN Center for Urban Settlements' Best Practices Center
* Member, Advisory Committee for the Center for Innovation & the Environment, Washington, D.C.
