Assistant at the Garfield Park Conservatory Education Department

Background:

The Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance (GPCA) is a community oriented non-profit organization involved in a unique partnership with the Chicago Park District and its historic plant conservatory. The GPCA Education Department supports the mission of the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance by connecting people to plants, and is dedicated to developing, implementing, and facilitating a heightened interest and deeper understanding of the plant world, both inside and beyond the Conservatory’s glass walls. We believe this plant excitement fosters a deeper respect for family, community, environmental awareness, and stewardship of the planet, and encourages life-long learners. Our current family program spaces include but are not limited to the Children’s Garden, the outside Demonstration Garden, and the upcoming Sugar from the Sun exhibit. From May through October of 2007, the Conservatory will be hosting “Niki in the Garden,” a special exhibit featuring a display of over 30 large-scale outdoor sculptures by internationally renowned artist Niki de Saint Phalle. This exhibition is expected to greatly increase the number of visitors to the Conservatory, especially during the upcoming summer months, and we require additional education staff to help facilitate this transition.

The Family Programs Assistant is a part-time position. Primary responsibilities are to:

Facilitate family educational programs. Primary program hours are weekends (Saturday and Sunday), and Thursday evenings. Additional program facilitation may be scheduled during the week as needed.

1. Assist Family Programs Facilitator in preparing materials for weekly educational programming and special Events, including pre-program prep and post-program clean-up.

2. Work with Education team to develop activities and programs that highlight our plant collection, special exhibits, and organizational message.


Position Responsibilities:

1. Work with the Family Programs Facilitator and other assistants to staff weekend and evening education programs; Family Explorations in the Children’s Garden, Family Make N’ Take activities, Demonstration Garden programming, and Roving Family Discovery carts.

2. Work with Education Department in the preparation and facilitation of special event-based activities.

3. Assist department with school and teacher programs, such as open houses and school field trips, on an as-needed basis.

4. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Applicant should be at least 21 years of age and have an interest in museum-based/ informal community-based programming, with a demonstrated ability to be an effective interpreter for both children of all ages and adults in an informal educational setting. Applicants having recently completed or currently in a Master’s program for Environmental or Arts Education a plus. Must be a strong charismatic face for our organization, work well under pressure, be extremely creative, enjoy and excel at direct service, and be able to meet the diverse needs of our visitors. Basic computer skills required. Proficiency in Corel Draw, Page Maker, and Excel a plus. Must be able to consistently work weekends and Thursday evenings.
