The Executive Director of the Northeast-Midwest Institute is elected by the Board of Directors and his/her principal responsibilities are to:
1. Oversee administrative, operational, and financial matters for a $3.5-million organization with funding from foundations, states, and government grants;
2. Lead the group’s policy and strategic planning processes, identify potential projects, and attract funding and partners;
3. Manage a professional staff – with expertise on an array of economic development, environmental, agricultural, and energy issues – and ensure the highest quality work product;
4. Represent the Institute’s policies and programs before multiple constituencies to promote issues of significance to the Northeast and
5. Identify and secure funding for the Institute and for research and policy studies.
Candidates should have a minimum seven years managing people and programs for a non-profit or comparable organization that focuses on policy development. They must possess excellent communications, analytical, and writing skills, and demonstrate an ability to raise funds and work in a team environment. Candidates also should have a strong understanding of the economic development and environmental issues impacting the region, as well as knowledge of government budget processes. Experience on Capitol Hill or comparable state or federal experience is desired.
