Senior Engineer - Water Resources

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is seeking an Engineer to contribute to its water resources and environmental planning programs.CMAP was created recently to integrate planning for land use and transportation in the counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will. CMAP and its partners are removing barriers to cooperation across geographical boundaries and subject areas such as land use, transportation, natural resources, housing, and economic development. By understanding how these issues-and our communities' futures-are interrelated, CMAP seeks to change the way planning is conducted in northeastern Illinois.

Position Description

The Engineer position requires a high level of professional responsibility and performance in the field of water resource engineering involving the subject areas of water quality, water supply, stormwater, floodplains, watershed management planning and implementation, stream/lake/wetland protection, nonpoint source pollution BMPs, water supply, water re-use, and wastewater. Strong leadership and initiative are required. This position entails technical and policy support, regulatory knowledge, and project management duties.

Qualifications and Skills

The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of the principles, practices, and regulatory policies of engineering and best management practices as they relate to stormwater, regulatory floodplains, streams/lakes/wetlands, nonpoint source pollution control, water quality, water supply, soil erosion and sediment control, wastewater, and the Illinois and Areawide Water Quality Management Plans. Abilities will include review and assessment of BMP designs and supporting documentation, field inspection and evaluation of BMP installation and construction techniques, and technical recommendations; review and evaluation of engineering aspects of amendments to the Illinois and Areawide Water Quality Management Plans including analysis of the cost-effectiveness and the likely environmental impacts (upon both water quality and land use) for proposed wastewater treatment options; assessment of nonpoint source pollution impacts to sensitive ecosystems and environmentally protected areas resulting from changes in population and/or land use; and hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality modeling. Excellent oral and written communication skills and personal computer skills required; GIS skills desirable.

Education and Experience

M.S. degree in civil, water resources, or environmental engineering or in a related field, plus at least five to seven years broad experience, or B.S. degree plus additional equivalent experience is required. Experience in environmental engineering, nonpoint source pollution control BMPs, and hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality modeling is essential; GIS skills desirable. Experience with local government, regional planning, and regulation is ideal. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois is a plus. Annual salary range commensurate with experience.

Excellent benefits.
