Gary Lawrence will discuss sustainable principles of Dongtan City, Chongming Island in metropolitan Shanghai and Treasure Island, San Francisco, USA. The presentation will compare and contrast the pursuit of similar goals related to the development of carbon-free communities. Gary will also present and discuss the ecological footprint model the company has developed to assist communities in Great Britain with becoming more sustainable.

Within Arup, Gary has been the Senior Advisor for the Dongtan City, Chongming Island in metropolitan Shanghai. The Dongtan development is part of plan for at least three new urban developments. These developments have been directed to become "the world's most ecological communities" by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. Each development will house a population of approximately 500,000 people. Energy, water, transport and waste strategies are also being integrated into the development.

Gary Lawrence a principal with Arup and is known as a global leader for sustainability. Within Arup he is also recognized as a specialist in urban sustainability. He currently serves on several major committees some of which include:

* Advisory Committee, UN Center for Urban Settlements' Best Practices Center
* Member, Advisory Committee for the Center for Innovation & the Environment, Washington, D.C.

National Parks Conservation Association

National Parks Conservation Association seeks an experienced and effective advocate and program manager to lead this exciting opportunity to open our new Midwest Regional Office (MWRO) and start up our regional program. The Midwest Regional Director will be NPCA's senior staff guiding park protection and field office strategies in the region. She/he is a leader on key issues affecting the parks, working closely with policy leaders and decision makers as well as park personnel, other conservation groups, and the media. The Regional Director will be responsible for initiating and managing the build-up of this regional office. We are seeking an experienced non-profit manager with strong entrepreneurial abilities, deep conservation commitment, and high energy. The central office will be located in Chicago, Ill. with plans for expansion of field offices in strategically important areas over time. Regional priorities include establishing strong relationships and working in partnership with local groups, grasstop coalition building, engagement on behalf of national park funding needs, monitoring and engaging in key issues for individual parks throughout the region, defending parks from out-of-boundary threats, helping secure core financial support for the office and NPCA generally, developing NPCA into a respected and influential conservation presence in the region, and developing and implementing a long-term vision and plan for establishing a stable, vibrant program in the region.

The Regional Director designs and implements regional programs to protect national park resources and improve the quality of visitors' experience in the parks. She/he is also a key team member on several of NPCA's national efforts, including the funding for the National Park System and park protection across the system. Fundraising is a significant component of the job, with assistance from the national office. She/he is a key player in the development of organizational policy and programs generally.

The Regional Director will hire and supervise one staff (Program Assistant) initially. She/he has major responsibility for designing and implementing he continued growth of the office's capacity to be effective throughout the rgion, which will a principal activity area of work during the offices nitial start-up period.
