National Parks Conservation Assn. (NPCA) seeks Senior Program Coordinator for new Midwest Regional Office NPCA recently opened a Midwest Regional office in Chicago. They are currently developing program strategies to address park protection for the National Park System in a 10-state area. The Senior Program Coordinator works with the Regional Director on the development and implementation of park protection programs, which may involve engaging members of the public, Congress, and allied organizations.

The Senior Program Coordinator plays a key role in developing new program areas for the parks of the region. Current programs and initiatives include Great Lakes restoration, invasive species issues at Great Lakes parks, protection of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (St. Louis Arch) from local control and development, and environmental threats to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

The Coordinator will play a pivotal role in building relationships throughout the Midwest with NGO allies, Congressional staff, and National Park Service staff.

The Madison County Planning and Development Department has an opening for a Planner III. The chosen candidate will assist the County Planning and Development Director and will have responsibilities supporting and staffing the Madison County Stormwater Commission by developing new programs, reports, meeting materials and plans. They will prepare educational materials and act as an adjunct Stormwater liaison to various local, state and federal agencies. The position will also support the Zoning Board of Appeals and Madison County Plan Commission and will provide staff and analytical advisory reports regarding land use and development cases to County decision-makers. The position will serve as County liaison to the various planning partner projects underway. This position requires excellent written and research analytical skills, understanding demographic, economic and other data; knowledge and principles of urban and regional planning; knowledge and understanding of information management systems including GIS and other software programs; summarize information from maps, graphs, reports and prepares summary reports and displays to illustrate concepts and projects. This position will also assist in drafting various County development regulations and attend public meetings and functions as required. The position requires a Masters Degree in Urban/Regional Planning, Public Administration or related field and a minimum of 4 years of related experience or a Bachelors Degree and six years of related experience. Program Description:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings (Hollings) scholarship program is designed to: (1) increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities; (2) increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy; (3) recruit and prepare students for public service careers with NOAA and other natural resource and science agencies at the federal, state and local levels of government; and (4) recruit and prepare students for careers as teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric science and to improve scientific and environmental education in the United States.

The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the Scholars with "hands-on"/ practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory Hollings Scholarship Program orientation, conferences where students present a paper or poster, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

Eligibility Requirements:
* U.S. citizenship.
* Full-time status as a 3rd year student in a four-year program or a 4th year student in a five year-program in the Fall 2008 term in an accredited college or university within the United States or U.S. territories.
* Cumulative aand semester/quarter GPA of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in all completed undergraduate courses and in the major field of study.
* Majoring in aa discipline area related to oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, or education, and supportive of the purposes of NOAA's programs and mission, e.g., biological, social and physical sciences; mathematics; engineering; computer and information sciences; and teacher education.

McCormick Tribune Community Internship

The Irwin W. Steans Center for Community-based Service Learning and Community Service Studies is accepting applications for the McCormick Tribune Community Internship for the 2007/2008 academic year. The McCormick Tribune Foundation has generously established an endowment at DePaul's Steans Center in order to provide funding for internships in community-based organizations that allow DePaul undergraduates to apply their knowledge and skills to benefit an organization while simultaneously providing the student with valuable work experience. This internship is reserved for our best and brightest DePaul undergraduates who have exhibited a commitment to community action, service and academic excellence form all disciplines and departments at DePaul.

Successful applicants will have developed a project in collaboration with a community organization that can take up to two quarters to complete the internship and should utilize the students' individual talents, experiences and academic expertise. Applicants are encouraged to develop an independent study with a faculty member that links the internship experience to academic learning. Interns receive up to $1200 per academic quarter. Applications for consideration will be reviewed by a panel of DePaul faculty, staff, senior level students, community representatives, and Steans Center advisory board members.

Previous Experience in a minimum of one Community based Service Learning (CbSL) Courses

Senior Engineer - Water Resources


The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is seeking an Engineer to contribute to its water resources and environmental planning programs.CMAP was created recently to integrate planning for land use and transportation in the counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will. CMAP and its partners are removing barriers to cooperation across geographical boundaries and subject areas such as land use, transportation, natural resources, housing, and economic development. By understanding how these issues-and our communities' futures-are interrelated, CMAP seeks to change the way planning is conducted in northeastern Illinois.

Position Description

The Engineer position requires a high level of professional responsibility and performance in the field of water resource engineering involving the subject areas of water quality, water supply, stormwater, floodplains, watershed management planning and implementation, stream/lake/wetland protection, nonpoint source pollution BMPs, water supply, water re-use, and wastewater. Strong leadership and initiative are required. This position entails technical and policy support, regulatory knowledge, and project management duties.

Qualifications and Skills

The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of the principles, practices, and regulatory policies of engineering and best management practices as they relate to stormwater, regulatory floodplains, streams/lakes/wetlands, nonpoint source pollution control, water quality, water supply, soil erosion and sediment control, wastewater, and the Illinois and Areawide Water Quality Management Plans. Abilities will include review and assessment of BMP designs and supporting documentation, field inspection and evaluation of BMP installation and construction techniques, and technical recommendations; review and evaluation of engineering aspects of amendments to the Illinois and Areawide Water Quality Management Plans including analysis of the cost-effectiveness and the likely environmental impacts (upon both water quality and land use) for proposed wastewater treatment options; assessment of nonpoint source pollution impacts to sensitive ecosystems and environmentally protected areas resulting from changes in population and/or land use; and hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality modeling. Excellent oral and written communication skills and personal computer skills required; GIS skills desirable.

Education and Experience

M.S. degree in civil, water resources, or environmental engineering or in a related field, plus at least five to seven years broad experience, or B.S. degree plus additional equivalent experience is required. Experience in environmental engineering, nonpoint source pollution control BMPs, and hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality modeling is essential; GIS skills desirable. Experience with local government, regional planning, and regulation is ideal. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois is a plus. Annual salary range commensurate with experience.

Public Policy Intern

Description:

The public policy intern will work closely with the Respiratory Health Association's Policy Team to achieve its advocacy goals. Through this program the intern will gain a better understanding of the legislative process and the advocacy role of non-profits and will participate in all aspects of our grass roots advocacy.

The intern will be expected to research and contact organizations and coalition partners for various projects. Support for and coordination of communications efforts will be a large part of the job. The intern will develop a working knowledge of the implementation procedures for the RHAMC's electronic advocacy system, which targets voters via email.

Primary Tasks:

• Research and track asthma and tobacco control policies throughout the country.

• Research key committee assignments and help determine legislators to target for lobbying efforts

• Assist Policy Team in developing association's advocacy agenda

• Coordinate communication with public officials as needed to achieve policy goals

• Research local organizations and coalitions for possible partnerships to assist advocacy objectives

• Draft fact sheets, letters, and editorials pertaining to advocacy goals

• Learn the operations of the electronic advocacy system, help develop e-advocacy campaigns

• Assist with production of final reports following advocacy efforts

Past advocacy successes include Smoke-free Chicago, Smoke-free Illinois, anti-idling legislation and improved laws for asthma medication for children in school. Our goals fluctuate depending upon the success of different campaigns.

Requirements:

Intern must have excellent written and verbal communication, an interest in improving the lung health of people in metropolitan Chicago, and must be a non-smoker and a self-starter.

This is an internship for the fall semester and requires 15 to 20 hours per week. This is a paid internship. Work-study students strongly encouraged to apply.

Assistant Manager Natural Resources

The Assistant Manager of Natural Resources utilizes professional ecological restoration, environmental assessments, and project planning knowledge to act as project manager for habitat restoration projects, provide administration and coordination of grant and mitigation/violation fund projects, to conduct ecological impact assessments of easements and adjacent development projects and represent the District on local and regional planning committees. Manages project contractors, consultants and the volunteer land stewardship staff.

EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in natural resource management, ecology, botany, or other closely related field. Five years experience necessary to gain full understanding of natural communities native to northeastern Illinois and methods for restoration and management of damaged ecosystems, knowledge of the standard sources of information in natural area management and ecological restoration, proficiency in the preparation and writing of reports, restoration plans, management schedules, and ecological impact assessments and project contracts. Must possess valid drivers license.
