Description

Work with an interdisciplinary team of scientists (physical oceanographers, ecologists, modelers) to develop and test various models (food web, spatially-explicit growth rate potential bioenergetics) to understand the response of pelagic fishes and food webs to hypoxia and physical structure in Lake Erie and the Chesapeake Bay. The incumbent will be expected to work with extensive fisheries acoustics data, write manuscripts, make presentations at national conferences and potentially participate in research cruises. The individual filling this position will be employed by the Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystem Research (CILER; www.ciler.snre.umich.edu), a joint institute between the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment (www.snre.umich.edu) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The position will be located at NOAA's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL; www.glerl.noaa.gov) in Ann Arbor, MI.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a PhD in Fisheries Science, Aquatic Ecology, or related field. Strong quantitative skills and experience in developing bioenergetics, individual-based, and/or food web models are required.

Experience with underwater acoustics and working on interdisciplinary research teams is desired.

The Department of Sociology at the University of New Hampshire is delighted to announce the availability of three new fully-funded 4-year Fellowships for graduate students with research interests in the area of Community, Health and Environment.

Fellowship awardees will receive full (12-months) funding for four years, and, will have the opportunity to work with faculty in Sociology, the School of Health and Human Services, and the Carsey Institute, an endowed policy research center studying families and communities.

DISTRICT EXTENSION SEA GRANT EDUCATOR


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Michigan Sea Grant, a joint program of Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, promotes greater knowledge of the Great Lakes through research and education. Sea Grant Extension Educators are expected to plan, organize and implement university-based educational programs that apply knowledge and understanding gained through research to assist Great Lakes constituencies and communities in their districts to wisely interact with Great lakes resources.
Each Sea Grant Extension educator is expected to serve a variety of clientele groups, but no single educator can be an expert in all areas of concern to all prospective clients. Therefore, educators are part of a team within Michigan Sea Grant Extension and Michigan State University Extension specializing in particular areas of concern in their districts and sharing their knowledge and skills with colleagues in other parts of the state and Great Lakes Basin. The person in this position will be responsible for programs that focus on enhancing Great Lakes Fisheries; including sport, commercial and charter fisheries, recreation boating industries, sustainable coastal development, and environmental stewardship of the Lake Michigan coastline.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
The individual selected is expected to work with the local constituencies, Sea Grant colleagues, and other Extension team members to identify key issues and develop educational initiatives that result in tangible benefit to constituencies and the resource. In concert with the Program Coordinator for Michigan Sea Grant Extension the educator will also develop performance measures to evaluate the effectiveness of Sea Grant Extension programming.


Specifically, this educator will be expected to conduct, facilitate and support educational programs that focus on the improvement of Michigans Great Lakes ecosystem and its fisheries resources including such programs that assist in the understanding of commercial recreation, tourism development, water safety, water quality, waterfront development and preservation, coastal economic development, aquatic nuisance species, natural resources management, environmental education, wise use of the land and natural resources, and environmental stewardship.


This educator will also be expected to build and maintain a network of contacts with other groups interested in natural resource related issues to facilitate better communication and interactions between constituencies with appropriate natural resource agencies. The Sea Grant educator must have the ability to work with a variety of clientele groups that often have competing visions for the Great Lakes and help to facilitate the interactions of these diverse constituencies for the common good of the resource. This individual will also be expected to collaborate with community based organizations and utilize the skills and abilities of community volunteers and stakeholders to obtain local resources that supplement Sea Grant/MSU Extension efforts and extend and expand programming support.


The educator must be able to effectively work with natural resources agencies, constituent organizations, coastal communities, community residents, leaders and volunteers in identifying problem areas and opportunities for educational impact. This individual will identify informational gaps and work with researchers to develop research that addresses important issues.


This individual is responsible for working with Sea Grant and MSUE administrative team members to assure compliance with equal opportunity, affirmative action and other civil rights requirements. He or she will be responsible for meeting MSU Extension commitments to diversity/pluralism.
The educator will prepare required reports necessary for the Employee Development System (EDS) and assists the Regional Director, County Extension Directors and Coordinator of Sea Grant Extension in tabulating relevant information necessary for unit outreach and other reporting requirements, including EIS, and other MSUE or Sea Grant Extension reports.


It is expected that the Sea Grant educator will participate in appropriate in-service training and professional development activities that maintain program area effectiveness and competence in their educational roles.


The educator must also perform other duties as assigned as related to the mission of the program.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Attainment of at least a Master's degree in an area directly related to fulfilling the responsibilities of the position. Background and working knowledge in fisheries, aquatic ecology and management, commercial recreation management, environmental education or related Great Lakes natural resources field.


Demonstrated effectiveness in leadership, facilitation, human relations, and written and oral communications. Experience in conducting effective Extension programming is highly desirable.


Proven record of working with Federal State and community based organizations and groups. Experience in establishing collaborations and community based initiatives.


Computer skills, including use of word processing, spread sheets, presentation software and the development of multimedia programs.


An understanding of educational program planning and successful experiences in proposal development. Experience managing operating budgets is desirable.


Documented understanding of and commitment to equal opportunity, affirmative action and diversity/pluralism. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse audiences of all socioeconomic levels and cultural backgrounds.

Plant Intern - The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory

The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, located in Gothic, CO is now accepting applications for an Invasive Plant Intern. The intern's duties will include 1) assisting with on-going experiments to control the spread of Canada Thistle and Smooth Brome, 2) active management of invasive plants by manual removal and spot applications of herbicides, 3) directing volunteers as they assist with weed management, and 4) using GPS equipment to map invasive plants. We are looking for someone who is not afraid of hard work and has a sincere interest in active management of invasive plants.

The chosen student will work an average of 40 hours/week from June 12 to August 11 (8 weeks). Room, meals, and station fees will be provided. Credit through the independent study program is possible (in which case tuition would be provided). If the intern needs a transcript issued by an accredited institution, the intern will be responsible for paying extended education fees through Western State College.

Legal Assistance Undergraduate Internship at CENTRO ROMERO Summer 2007

The Steans Center - Centro Romero Internship provides a $3400 stipend for a full-time ten-week internship at Centro Romero, a community-based organization that has been serving the refugee immigrant population on the northeast side of Chicago for over 22 years. Centro Romero’s Latin American Legal Assistance Services Program (LALAS) provides direct service representation and immigration education to a primarily lower-income, Spanish-speaking immigrant community. By assisting persons in attaining lawful permanent residency and United States citizenship, the LALAS Program literally and directly enhances the person, the family, and the American community at large.

The project seeks to place an undergraduate student with demonstrated interest in immigration or public interest work. Fluency in Spanish is preferred. During the course of the internship, the undergraduate student will have the opportunity to assist immigrants and refugees in a legal environment. The work may involve contacting clients, observing and participating in client interviews, drafting letters or client interview summaries, gathering documents, conducting factual research into conditions in the home countries of clients, providing translation and interpretation and assisting with application forms and participating in naturalization workshops and responding to other agency needs.

The student will work under the supervision of a law student, an on-site supervisor and receive additional training and support from DePaul College of Law faculty.

The student will maintain a weekly journal providing a summary of the work done as well as reflection on interpersonal, professional and global issues in providing services to low-income immigrants and refugees. At the end of the project the student will participate in a final evaluation or exit interview with the agency staff. The student will also provide Clinic faculty with an evaluation of the internship and a final report on the projects worked on during the course of the internship.

WETLAND INTERNSHIP

1 Position Available

Background

In August 2001, SMC amended its Watershed Development Ordinance (WDO) to include protection for isolated wetlands. The WDO requires that developments must maintain between 80% and 150% of the pre-development storm runoff volume to preserved wetlands. SMC is studying preserved wetlands on a number of post-development sites to evaluate the effectiveness of this "80-150" hydrology requirement.

Duties/Responsibilities

SMC is seeking one (1) wetland intern to work with us this summer. The wetland intern will spend time in the field and office under the guidance of SMC staff. This position will allow the intern to apply classroom experiences to real world applications by collecting data for later analysis both by the intern and SMC staff. This position will also expose the intern to many aspects of SMC’s wetland regulatory program. * Review wetland permit files to compile a list of projects that included wetlands impacted by development under the WDO.

The San Francisco Foundation is recruiting for the 2007-2009 Multicultural Fellowship Program. Designed as a two-year full-time program, the Multicultural Fellowship assists in the development of professionals in the nonprofit and public sectors. The Multicultural Fellowship Program provides professionals of color with challenging work experiences as a member of the Foundation's grantmaking program staff. There are also opportunities for community building in the Bay Area and to enhance the Fellows' professional development as future foundation, nonprofit, or public service leaders.

This year, the Fellowship Program is seeking one Fellow in each of the following program areas: Community Development, Community Health, and Environment. The fellowship positions will commence in July 2007.

The general qualifications for the Fellowship Program are: Self-directed individual and team player, demonstrated interest in nonprofit or public service, and volunteer and/or work experience in one of the Foundation's specific program areas. Strong oral and written communication skills, analytical skills, ease in producing high quality work in a high production environment, and computer and word processing skills, including Windows and Microsoft Word. Ability to multi-task is a must. Historically, Fellows have five to fifteen years of work experience.

Community Development Program Fellow Qualifications: Knowledge of community development and anti-poverty strategies with an understanding of community and economic security issues confronting low-income people. Background in workforce development, homeless assistance, or affordable housing desired.

Community Health Program Fellow Qualifications: Knowledge of key concepts and principles related to community health promotion and prevention efforts. Experience working on such issues as access to health care, health disparities, health promotion and education, and the health needs of underserved populations. Understanding of community needs assessment and trends in the delivery and funding of health services on the local level is important. Background in health policy is welcomed.

Environment Fellow Qualifications: Education and experience in the area of environmental advocacy, environmentally sustainable economies, environmental health and justice, land-use and smart growth and policy work. A background in bay area environmental justice issues and environmental sustainability is desired.

The San Francisco Foundation is organized into six program areas that have staff with specific subject matter expertise and experience with different kinds of organizations. Scientist - Human-Environment Interactions

The Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) is seeking a scientist to play a leadership role in CIESIN's research concerning human-environment interactions. The position may be filled at either the Associate Research Scientist or Research Scientist level, depending on experience and qualifications. The position requires a Ph.D. in demography, geography, economics, sociology or a closely related social, natural, or health science discipline. The Research Scientist position requires 5 years of post-doctoral work involving interdisciplinary research on human-environment interactions; the Associate Research Scientist position requires two years of such experience. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience integrating socioeconomic and biophysical data, experience in designing and implementing complex research projects, an ability to raise research funds, and quantitative statistical and geospatial analytical skills. Experience with remote sensing or simulation modeling is a plus.

Save The River Job Posting

Position Title: Program Manager

Reports to: Executive Director

Status: Exempt/Full time

Overview:

For nearly 30 years, Save The River has been the leading advocacy group working to protect the Upper St. Lawrence River through advocacy, education and research. STR's advocacy programs have included working to halt Seaway expansion and oppose winter navigation, campaigning for healthier water levels regulation, and promoting improved spill response planning along the River. STR also works to improve the River's water quality, protect its natural wildlife and to educate communities up and down the River about this unique and wonderful natural environment.

The Program Manager has significant programmatic responsibilities. S/he does a wide variety of community outreach and works with volunteers in a variety of programs to promote River protection. S/he works closely with other STR staff to plan and produce events, write and produce materials about River issues, inform membership of recent developments through the newsletter and assist the Executive Director to meet both programmatic and fundraising goals.

Responsibilities:

- Develop written materials for STR's public relations and outreach efforts including press releases, web pages, newsletters, etc.

- Coordinate volunteer involvement in STR's programs such as BeachWatch, Riverkeeper, events, etc.

- Assist with designing and implementing education/outreach programs

- Assist with event coordination, taking on event management role as appropriate

- Assist with grant writing and reporting.

- Assist with other STR program and office duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

- Bachelor's degree in natural resources, environmental policy, environmental education or relevant social sciences plus four years experience in relevant field.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable teaching volunteers and speaking before small and large groups.

- Strong organizational skills and a strong commitment to working in a team effort with board, executive director, volunteers and members.

- Capacity to manage a number of projects at once and deal effectively with the stress of multi-tasking.

- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and Access).

- Knowledge of the St. Lawrence River, and environmental policy and restoration techniques strongly preferred.

Working Conditions:

- Mostly office environment with considerable outdoor river related activities during the summer

- Must be available during the summer for extensive weekend work. Ability and willingness to travel occasionally for conferences and meetings.

Travel throughout the western Great Lakes region is extensive, with extended periods of duty occurring in parks within the region. Summary of Position:

The Program Assistant maintains the membership database and assists the IPAW Board of Directors by facilitating various activities and communications. This
position is a one- year, part-time contract. Budget allotment allows for approximately 6 hours per week (312 hours per year for an annual total of $4,212.00 at a rate of $13.50
/hour). There are no benefits offered with the position. The position will be supervised by the IPAW Board of Directors. Any mileage incurred will be reimbursed at the rate of $0.405
per mile. The two most time-consuming tasks involve database management and BOD support.

The duties listed here are in approximate order of priority.

Membership:
1. Maintain membership database in Microsoft Access.
2. Send membership renewal letters.
3. Coordinate nominations information and send board election ballot mailing.
4. Arrange for printing of membership materials (brochure, envelopes, etc.).

Assistance to the IPAW Board of Directors:
1. Maintain Board member contact information with current data (address, email, telephone, term).
2. Maintain Committee contact information.
3. Maintain organizational records (IRS info, State of Wisconsin, By-Laws, etc.).
4. Record minutes of Board meetings (or ensure that they get recorded), identify and note down "To Do's" of BOD, send out to Board, listserve, web manager). Send out To-Do
reminder emails to appropriate Board members roughly half-way between BOD meetings.
5. Help set-up BOD meeting dates, times and places.
6. Consult with President and other board members on agenda items.
7. Prepare and send out Board meeting notices, agendas and conference all details.

Pollution Prevention Internship Program

Each year, Illinois EPA's Office of Pollution Prevention recruits upper-level university students to work on pollution prevention (P2) projects during the summer. Students typically have backgrounds in engineering, environmental management, chemistry, or occupational health and safety. While students have been placed primarily at manufacturing facilities, they have also worked at small business development centers, trade associations, local government facilities, environmental groups and military installations. The purpose of the program is to help facilities identify, research and pilot P2 technologies and practices. The program has helped Illinois businesses save millions of dollars and reduce environmental releases by hundreds of thousands of pounds.
